Paint protection film brands

PPF brands compared: XPEL, 3M, STEK, SunTek and LLumar

Every major film brand sells a clear gloss film with a 10-year or longer warranty, so the brand matters less than the installer and the coverage you buy. Here’s what each maker publishes, and how many of the 4,628 film installers we list name each one. We haven’t tested any of them.

What they have in common

All five makers describe a clear urethane film with a top coat that heals light scratches with heat. All tie the warranty to professional installation and send claims through the installer, and none of them cover rock chips that break the film.

So two quotes for “PPF” can differ less by brand than by coverage, edge wrapping, prep and the installer’s skill.

Where they differ

Warranty length runs from 10 to 12 years on the top films. STEK and XPEL tie their coatings to the film warranty: STEK says Final Coat extends it to 12 years, and XPEL excludes non-XPEL coatings. LLumar and 3M limit their films to original paint.

Thickness is published by XPEL, 3M and STEK and not by SunTek or LLumar, and each measures it differently (with or without adhesive or liner), so small differences don’t mean much.

How to choose

Pick the installer first. Ask which film they install most, how they handle edges and seams, and who handles a warranty claim. Then pick the finish you want, gloss, satin or color, and get the coverage in writing.

  • Which film line, by name.
  • Which panels, and whether edges are wrapped.
  • Whether paint correction is included.
  • The written warranty, and who you call for a claim.

What film costs

Shops post a median of $1,999 for paint protection film, with half of posted prices between $1,199 and $3,800 (127 shops). By coverage, shops post a median of $1,195 for partial front, $2,000 for full front, $6,000 for full body.

Professional installation

Ask shops what’s in the price

Find installers near you, then ask about the exact product, the prep and which surfaces get coated.
