Ceramic Coating

The best iron removers for car paint

Brake dust embeds in paint and keeps corroding after the car looks clean. An iron remover dissolves it chemically, which is the only way to take it out without abrading the surface — and it is the step that decides whether a coating bonds to paint or to contamination.

What separates a good one from a bad one

Price per ounce, not price
These are sold in everything from 500ml to a gallon and the sticker price says nothing about value. Every price below carries its per-ounce figure.
Smell is a real buying criterion
The active chemistry releases a sulfurous odor as it works. Some are far worse than others, and it matters if you are working in a garage.
You need it before coating, not after
Decontamination is a pre-coating step. On an already-coated car a good wash is usually enough, and an iron remover is a job for once or twice a year at most.

Gyeon Q²M Iron Our pick

Gyeon Q²M Iron

A pH-neutral iron remover that turns purple as it works.

The color change is genuinely useful rather than a gimmick: you can see how much embedded brake dust the paint was carrying, which is usually a surprise. Neutral, so it is safe over a coating.

Worth knowing first

It smells appalling. Use it outdoors and rinse thoroughly.

Gyeon Q²M Tar
Also needed

Gyeon Q²M Tar

A solvent that dissolves tar and adhesive residue.

Tar does not come off with a wash and picking at it with clay drags it across the panel. Dissolving it first is the only approach that does not mar the paint.

Solvent-based, so it will strip a coating where you use it. Spot-treat, then re-top.

CarPro IronX
Also good

CarPro IronX

The iron remover that made this category mainstream.

Still the reference product, and the one most shops will name if you ask. Works the same way and just as visibly.

Frequently backordered, which is why it is not the pick despite being the better known bottle.

Nanoskin Autoscrub Wash Mitt
Also good

Nanoskin Autoscrub Wash Mitt

A rubber-faced mitt that does the job of a clay bar.

Faster than clay over a whole car and it does not need throwing away when dropped, which a clay bar does.

Needs constant lubrication and a light touch. Used dry or pressed hard it will mar.

The cheapest way to find out whether your paint is contaminated at all, and it includes the lubricant people otherwise forget to buy.

Common questions

How do I know if my paint needs decontaminating?

Wash the car, dry it, then run your hand over the paint inside a thin plastic bag. Smooth means clean. Gritty means bonded contamination is sitting on the surface, and no amount of washing will shift it.

Will iron remover damage a ceramic coating?

A pH-neutral iron remover used as directed will not. Tar removers are different: they are solvent-based and will thin or strip a coating where they touch it, so spot-treat with those and re-apply a topper afterwards.

How often does a coated car need this?

Once or twice a year for most cars, and it is worth doing before a topper goes on. Sealing contamination under a fresh layer preserves it rather than removing it.

Where this fits

This is one shelf of decontamination. The rest of what a coated car needs, and what each shelf is for, is on the shop — and if you would rather have the work done properly, the installer directory lists shops by what they publish rather than what they pay.

Published rates are a range. What you pay comes down to size, paint condition and how much correction the finish needs first. Tell us the car and we will put it in front of shops that publish their pricing.

Know what the market is actually charging

Once a month, read off the price lists of the 547 shops that publish one. Whether you are about to buy or about to quote, it is the same data from opposite sides.

For people about to spend four figures on paint, and wanting to spend it once.

  • What shops are actually chargingWhen the published price bands move in your state, and by how much. You will know whether a quote is normal before you are sitting in the office.
  • What a quote should spell outThe lines that separate a real quote from a number: correction stages, the warranty terms, what happens if it fails.
  • Aftercare that changes the outcomeThe few things that decide whether a coating reaches its term, and the ordinary products that quietly end it early.
