Is a DIY ceramic coating as good as a professional one?

The chemistry is comparable and the result usually is not, because the result is mostly preparation. A shop corrects the paint first, works under lighting that shows what a garage bulb hides, and has done it enough times to catch a high spot before it cures. A careful DIY job on good paint can look excellent. A DIY coating over swirls seals the swirls in for the term.

What is the difference between a ceramic coating and a ceramic spray?

Term and hardness. A coating cures into a semi-permanent layer measured in years and has to be prepared for properly. A spray bonds loosely, takes ten minutes with no prep beyond a clean panel, and is gone in months. Sprays are on the toppers shelf, and they are the right answer if what you want is beading rather than protection.

How long does a DIY ceramic coating take?

The application is an hour or two. The preparation is the day. Wash, decontaminate, correct anything you intend to correct, then wipe every panel down with a dedicated prep solution so nothing is left for the coating to bond to but paint. Then the car needs to stay dry while it cures, typically 24 hours minimum and longer in the cold.

What happens if I get a high spot?

A high spot is coating that was not levelled and cured proud of the surface, and it looks like a smear that will not wipe off. Caught within the first hour it comes off with more coating and a fresh towel. Cured, it needs machine polishing. This is the reason to coat one panel at a time in good light rather than doing the whole car and then inspecting it.
