Polishing
The only method makers agree on.
When
Before a different coating, or to fix it.
Measure first
Polishing takes some clear coat.
In this guide 4 sections
Why it takes polishing
A cured coating is bonded to the clear coat. Gtechniq says coatings can only be removed by abrasion or machine polishing, and that its Crystal Serum Ultra may need wet sanding if it was misapplied. IGL says removing a coating from paint is rare and takes a polisher with heavy or medium pads.
GYEON sells a chemical remover it names for stripping a degraded coating before recoating. Polishing is the method the makers agree on.
When a coating needs to come off
Usually before a new, different coating, when an old one is uneven or damaged, or to fix cured high spots. IGL’s Kenzo data sheet says an old coating should be removed, preferably by polishing, before recoating. You don’t need to remove a healthy coating just because it beads less.
What it costs
Removal is priced like paint correction, because it is paint correction. The polishing that takes the coating off also takes some clear coat, so ask the shop to measure the paint first on an older or repainted car.
Coatings on glass and wheels
Glass coatings come off with a glass polish. IGL says its glass polish removes a glass coating by polishing until the glass no longer beads water.
Professional installation
Ask shops what’s in the price
Find installers near you, then ask about the exact product, the prep and which surfaces get coated.
